Since it is easily dissolved in alcohol, gasoline, turpentine and other organic dissolvent, rosin is one of the basic ingredients of paints. In the producing of gum rosin based drying oil, gum rosin is often changed into resinate and then it is boiled with drying oil (such as China wood oil) with volatile dissolvent added in. Then vehicle, which can be made into enamels if boiling with different pigments, is produced.
Gum Rosin is also widely used in road paints. This paint is composed of thermoplastic resin, plasticizer, pigment, filling material, light-reflection material and water-displacing agent, etc.Most thermoplastic resin is rosin maleate ester made from the reaction between rosin maleate and polybasic alcohol, and polymerized rosin and disproportionate rosin ¨C polybasic alcohol esters are also possible options.
In China, the paint industry is the largest rosin-consuming department. The average consuming rate of paint production is 5-6%. In some places outside China, synthetic resin is now replacing rosin as a raw material for paint producing due to the highly developed petrochemical engineering. While rosin as a natural resin with abundant sources, is easily dried and smooth on its surface. It will continuously be the basic raw material for paint producing.
